DENVER—Authorities say they’re still investigating three suspected drug users and their alleged racist threats to attack Democratic nominee-in-waiting Barack Obama during the Democratic National Convention.
The men were arrested in the Denver area over the weekend with methamphetamine, guns and bulletproof vests. One of them told authorities they had discussed a plan to hurt Obama, who will become the first black candidate nominated by a major party this week.
But U.S. Attorney Troy Eid (EYED) said Tuesday that the men were high on methamphetamine when arrested and officials don’t believe they ever posed a credible threat to Obama.
Tharin Gartrell, his cousin Shawn Robert Adolf and Nathan Johnson have been charged with drug and weapons offenses. They have not been charged with threatening to assassinate Obama or with other national-security-related crimes.
