Don’t plan on parking at the stadium if you have credentials to hear Barack Obama speak Thursday night.
There will be no parking at Invesco Field at Mile High. The Democratic Party is encouraging delegates and people holding community credentials for Obama’s acceptance speech to walk, bike or take public transit to the stadium in keeping with its “green” convention theme.
Those who bike will be able to lock them at Rude Park, southwest of the stadium. RTD will be running shuttles from Coors Field to the stadium as well as light rail routes. The Democrats suggest checking RTD routes and schedules online to find the most convenient routes.
Car parking will be available in private garages and lots downtown as well as city streets outside the area closed for the speech.
Invesco will open at 1 p.m. The Democrats recommend people coming to hear Obama should arrive as early as possible, because everyone will have to go through a security checkpoint. There is a long list of prohibited items, including food and beverages, umbrellas, large bags, sharp objects and frisbees or inflated balls.
“People can expect to have their person seached and their bags searched,” said Malcolm Wiley, spokesman for Secret Service. “I would urge folks to look at that list (on the DNCC website) and make sure they don’t have those items. If folks don’t have those items that are prohibited, then the lines will move much quicker.”
People will be able to buy food and drinks at stadium concession stands, but alcoholic beverages will not be sold.
