FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Colorado State University police are using three-wheeled electrical scooters to patrol campus, an idea they say helps the department save gas and makes officers more approachable to students.

Assistant police Chief Frank Johnson says the department is using less patrol vehicles and is spending less money on gasoline. The emission-free scooters cost about 10 cents a day to operate. The department has four scooters so far but Johnson said they may buy more.

He said in addition to patrolling campus, the scooters will be used during football games and for traffic enforcement. The scooters can travel up to 25 mph and can be used indoors and in the snow.
