DENVER—Denver-based Mercury Cos. Inc., which owns title companies, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

In a filing Aug. 28 in federal bankruptcy court in Denver, Mercury Companies lists assets and liabilities estimated at between $50 million and $100 million.

The company has been hit by a declining real estate market.

Earlier this summer, Mercury Cos. said it was shutting down operations in Arizona, Texas and California. It also sold four title insurance agencies to Fidelity National Financial Inc. for an undisclosed amount.
