SEATTLE — Jan Jorgensen broke through the line and blocked Ryan Perkins’ 35-yard extra-point attempt with two seconds left in regulation, and No. 15 BYU held on to a 28-27 win over Washington on Saturday.
Jake Locker drove the Huskies 76 yards in 17 plays, capped by his 3-yard plunge to pull Washington within one. But Locker was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, a point of emphasis for officials this season after a touchdown. Locker threw the ball in the air before jumping with his teammates in the end zone.
“After scoring the touchdown, the player threw the ball into the air, and we are required, by rule, to assess a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty,” Pac-10 referee Larry Farina said in a statement given to Washington officials. “It is a celebration rule that we are required to call. It was not a judgment call.”
Perkins approached the kick slowly and hit it low, giving Jorgensen a chance to get his paws on the kick.
Max Hall led the Cougars with 338 yards passing and three touchdowns, including a 15-yarder to tight end Dennis Pitta with 3:31 left.
Locker accounted for 270 of Washington’s 337 total yards.
Texas A&M 28, New Mexico 22
ALBUQUERQUE — Jerrod Johnson replaced the injured Stephen McGee and threw three touchdown passes as Texas A&M gave coach Mike Sherman his first win with the Aggies.
A&M (1-1) survived New Mexico’s swarming defensive scheme and bounced back from an embarrassing season-opening loss, 18-14 to Arkansas State.
Johnson completed 10-of-19 for 124 yards in place of McGee, who sprained his right shoulder on the opening series and didn’t return.
Notre Dame 21, San Diego St. 13
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Jimmy Clausen threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate moments after Notre Dame forced San Diego State to fumble in the end zone as the Fighting Irish rallied.
Clausen, who also had a 22-yard TD pass to freshman Michael Floyd late in the first half, was 21-of-34 passing for 237 yards with two interceptions.
No. 22 Utah 42, UNLV 21
SALT LAKE CITY — Brian Johnson threw for two touchdowns and scored on a 56-yard run as the Utes scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and pulled away after a shaky first half. Utah scored 35 straight points and avenged a 27-0 loss in Las Vegas last September.
TCU 67, Stephen F. Austin 7
FORT WORTH, Texas — Michael Turner scored three times in the first half as the Horned Frogs’ offense converted on its first five possessions to build a 42-7 halftime lead.
