COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The city of Colorado Springs is laying off five employees, eliminating 23 vacant positions and consolidating departments to help make up a $23 million shortfall expected next year.
City officials blame the shortfall mainly on declining sales tax revenues.
The city’s information technology department will absorb most of the layoffs. Departments will be consolidated to five from nine.
Some supervisors were moved into jobs with less responsibility and less pay.
The city has also discussed cutting back on the repaving of streets and reducing bus service. The city’s projected revenues for next year are $232.3 million and expenses are $255.6 million.
