BOULDER, Colo.—A Broomfield man has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for assaulting another man because he is Hispanic.
Twenty-old Abraham Paquet pleaded guilty to harassment in the attack in March outside a Boulder convenience store. Police say Paquet and companion Joshua Ruzek called Ivan Ponce De Leon-Najera a derogatory name and asked, “Why are you stealing our jobs?”
District Judge James Klein Friday denied the request from Paquet’s attorney to sentence her client to 18 months of work release instead of jail. Paquet started the fight by throwing the first punch.
Ruzek was sentenced in May to 18 months in jail.
