Women who want a place to wear their lace-up booties, feminine blouses and pencil skirts — three of fall’s most coveted style items — need look no further than the list of upcoming fashion benefits on the social calendar.
From shows being planned by retailers to masquerade balls, there’s something for every fashion taste. Among the more novel projects is Susan Kiely’s Runway to India event planned for Sept. 24 at Coors Field. For more than two years, Kiely has been working with women in India who are learning sewing skills so they can produce colorful silk jackets that Kiely sells to women in the U.S.
“In India, these women are going from living in the slums to the point where they can get an apartment and pay for their children to go to school,” says Kiely, who initially funded the project with the help of her husband Leo Kiely, chief executive of MillerCoors. “It’s made a huge difference in their lives.”
The money earned at the benefit, where local women will model her SK Designs jackets, will be used to fund a second sewing school in Hyderabad, south of Dehli.
