NEW YORK — Tina Fey has returned to “Saturday Night Live” to play Gov. Sarah Palin.
Fey, who left the show in 2006 to star in “30 Rock,” returned Saturday on the “SNL” season opener to play the Alaskan governor and Sen. John McCain’s running mate. She appeared in the opening sketch with last season’s best received political character, Amy Poehler as Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Since Palin’s entry onto the national political stage, speculation had been rampant over who might play her on the program. Many have commented that Fey resembles her.
“SNL” premiered Saturday evening with Olympian Michael Phelps as host. An appearance had been planned by Sen. Barack Obama, but his campaign said that the Democratic nominee for president was canceling. Campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Obama decided it was no longer appropriate because of the devastation after Hurricane Ike. The Associated Press
