COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs police say a man who was assaulted and left to die downtown earlier this month was a transient.

Police identified him Wednesday as 50-year-old Darrell Newhouse. Coroner’s officials say he died of asphyxiation.

Officers responding to a report of an assault Sept. 1 arrived to find Newhouse had already died.

Police arrested 48-year-old Matthew Rowland shortly after the assault was reported. He is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Officers did not release a possible motive.
