Getting your player ready...

“You guys are way too overly reactive regarding the Broncos. I’m a big fan of the team and love quarterback Jay Cutler. But if the refs get the call right against San Diego, this team is 1-1 and everyone is griping Cutler cost the game with an interception and a fumble during two visits to the red zone in the final minutes. There would be comparisons to Brian Griese, not John Elway, and no articles containing the words ‘Super Bowl.’ Let’s get real. The Broncos barely and unfairly beat the Bolts, who were missing linebacker Shawne Merriman and running back LaDainian Tomlinson. The team’s getting better. But please! Calm down.”

Mike, Pennington, N.J.

Kiz: What do you do for a livelihood, sell wet blankets? If I’ve learned anything as a proud resident of this dusty old cowtown for 25 years, it’s a lesson taught to me by local sports gabber and marketing genius Lou from Littleton. Nobody has ever gone broke from fanning the flames of Broncomania, cousin. But if you’re going to point a gun to my head and demand the truth, here goes: Before it’s all said and done, the Broncos will have to beat San Diego twice merely to win the AFC West.

They finish last?

“Clint Hurdle absolutely stinks as a manager. He stinks, his staff stinks and they all need to go away for the Rockies to achieve the success they should have. This team is talented enough, and has been talented enough to compete in the weak NL West for the last four years. Hurdle’s lack of baseball instincts and his game-day decisions are appalling to anyone who understands the game. Yeah, Clint is a nice guy, but you know what they say.”

Neil, Denver

Kiz: Shush, shush, shush. The Rockies were hoping nobody noticed as they slowly sank in the West. If the Monfort brothers owned a team in New York or St. Louis, where baseball is a 2-4/7 passion, they would have no choice but to fire their manager.

Love on the Rocks.

“The reality is the Rockies are a nice team still woefully short on pitching, with a run-producing lineup that got hot for 30 games in 2007 and had a freakish run to the World Series. So, where are the Rockies? About where they were in 1995, ’98 and ’05. Yada, yada, yada. Hurdle is a good manager, but the team is also playing down to its NL West competition.”

Kenny, Wimberley, Texas

Kiz: Here’s where the local club has a credibility problem: Either our Kid Rocks weren’t quite all the club cracked them up to be, or Hurdle failed them miserably. I see more causes for concern on the lineup card than with the guy who fills it out.

Orange you forgetting something?

“Kiz, Baby: Yeah, Carmelo ‘Clank’ Anthony is sporting a shiny, new, gold Olympic medal, no thanks to him. In Beijing, Melo rode the bamboo bench whenever the going got tough, because he’s such a defensive liability and streaky scorer. He had some decent moments, against teams that didn’t matter. But what matters is his ability to get it done when it means something. He has never done that.”

G-Brag, Longmont

Kiz: When it came to crunch time in China, it’s true Coach K often invited Melo to take a seat. But your charge Anthony has never won a big game? Please see: Syracuse 81, Kansas 78 in the 2003 NCAA championship.

Pass on Kobe.

“Do you feel like you were wrong in your assessment of Kobe Bryant? Without him in the Olympics, the United States loses. Sure, there are fans who don’t like Bryant, but he is one of the top two players in the game when it comes to popularity.”

Solemon, Concord, Calif.

Kiz: The Olympics did nothing to change my mind regarding Bryant on two key points. No. 1: He’s the most talented basketball player on the planet. No. 2: I’d much rather root for LeBron James, Manu Ginobili, Allen Iverson

Parting shot

And today’s parting shot is a word of praise amid all the times NFL referee Ed Hochuli has heard his name taken in vain during the past week.

“Major kudos to Hochuli for owning up to his mistake and even answering e-mails from Chargers fans to apologize.”

John, Lakewood
