National Safety Transportation Board officials are investigating the cause of the fiery plane crash that killed two people and two dogs Thursday night near Kremmling, authorities say.

Investigators are trying to confirm the identity of the two victims whose bodies were badly burned in the crash at 8:25 p.m. at the Grand River Ranch, according to a news release by Grand County Sheriff Rod Johnson.

The small, twin-engine plane was on final approach when it crashed, said Mike Fergus, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

He said it has not been determined what caused the crash.

The plane burst into flames on impact 2 miles west of the airport, authorities said.

Flames consumed the wreckage, according to Johnson.

The plane took off from a Las Vegas airport, Fergus said.

He said the PA-60 Piper Aerostar plane built in 1982 was owned by BDW Equipment Leasing out of Las Vegas.

The Grand County coroner’s office responded. The NSTB is the primary investigative agency looking into the cause of the crash.
