Kyle J. Metcalf, 17, was identified today as the driver of the black Subaru Legacy involved in Friday’s two-vehicle crash near North 61st Street in Longmont.

Metcalf died from his injuries Saturday after being airlifted to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver .

Caitlin A. Epple, 18, of Longmont was in the passenger seat of the Subaru and was killed in the 7:52 p.m. crash, said Trooper Gilbert Mares, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

Gregory Sutliff, 44, of Brighton, the driver of a white Ford F-350 pickup, was taken by ambulance to Longmont United Hospital in serious condition. A passenger in his truck, Mary J. Sutliff, 44, also of Brighton, was taken to the same hospital with moderate injuries, Mares said.

Metcalf was driving the Subaru east on Colorado 66 and was approaching North 61st Street when he passed a car at high speed, Mares said.

When Metcalf turned his car back into the eastbound lane, he overcorrected and his car spun counterclockwise into the path of the pickup, Mares said. The pickup slammed into the passenger side of the Subaru, spinning it in the opposite direction and shoving it into a ditch, he said.

The truck, which was pulling a camper trailer, spun off the highway and rolled onto the driver’s side, Mares said.

Troopers continue to investigate the crash. Metcalf was believed to be driving above the speed limit, Mares said. Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash, he said.
