Burglaries in Boulder are up almost 20 percent this year compared with 2007, and a community meeting will be held Wednesday in hopes of turning back the trend.

Boulder logged 292 residential burglaries citywide between Jan. 1 and Sept. 12, a 17 percent increase over the same period last year, the Boulder Police Department said in a news release.

Residents in northwest Boulder concerned about the burglaries asked authorities to hold a community meeting to help them address the problem, police said.

The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Centennial Middle School. Police Chief Mark Beckner and detectives working the burglaries will be on hand.

Police remind residents to lock doors and windows when possible; many of the burglaries have taken place in unsecured homes.

Residents can report suspicious activities to police at 303-441-3333.
