DENVER—A tango teacher convicted of improperly touching one of his students has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge after filing an appeal.

Fifty-five-year-old Charles Gale received a one-year suspended jail sentence and nine months probation for a misdemeanor assault plea that will not make him a sex offender. Gale was convicted in April of unlawful sexual contact.

Garbled taped recordings of the proceedings made prosecutors agree to a new trial. Gale’s attorney says Gale pleaded guilty to the lesser charge to avoid the time and expense of a new trial.

The woman who accused Gale says he touched her inappropriately during two tango lessons. Gale’s attorney contended the touching was necessary to teach her to tango.
