The Denver medical examiner’s office has identified a suspected burglar who died early Tuesday after a struggle with two residents in the Washington Park neighborhood.

The man was identified as Steven Smith, 38, but the results of the autopsy were not released pending more investigation. Smith does not have a permanent residence listed on his autopsy report.

He struggled to breathe after wrestling with two residents in the 600 block of South Vine Street about 3 a.m. Tuesday, after residents saw him prowling in backyards off the alley between Gaylord and Vine streets.

Police have not named the two men, who have declined interviews. Joey Bunch, The Denver Post
