The Denver Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a suspected burglar who died early Tuesday after a struggle with two residents in the Washington Park neighborhood.

The man was identified as Steven Smith, 38, but the results of his autopsy were not released pending further investigation, according to the office.

Smith does not have a permanent residence listed on the autopsy report.

He struggled to breathe after wrestling with two residents in the 600 block of South Vine Street at about 3 a.m. Tuesday, after residents saw him prowling in the alley between Gaylord and Vine streets.

Smith reportedly had a crowbar and a flashlight with him.

One neighbor saw a man in a white pickup truck near the scene and thought he was an accomplice waiting for Smith.

Police said Smith pulled a knife on one resident who confronted him and wrestled with him and another man. The slashed resident was treated for his injuries.

Police have not named the two men, who have declined interviews.
