There are times when walking around for hours in a fog, even hunting in one, isn’t such a bad thing.
Take the early September experience of 15-year-old Earl Duffy, who used the mist to his advantage in bagging a three-quarter curl bighorn sheep in the Comanche Peak Wilderness just north of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Young Duffy, who already has bagged a bear and six-point bull elk in his brief hunting career, spotted the ram in silhouette a half-mile away while scouting at sundown with guide Scott Limmer.
On opening morning, the animal moved to an adjacent mountain, whereupon a dense fog settled in.
“We were able to make a stalk under the fog cover. The fog cleared, then came in again,” related Tom Duffy, who accompanied his son on the hunt.
Earl Duffy, a sophomore at Rock Canyon High School, crept still closer and made the shot at 225 yards.
