COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Colorado Springs man is free on $10,000 bond after surrendering to authorities in connection with the hit-and-run death of a campus police officer.

The Colorado State Patrol says 35-year-old Mark Vigil turned himself in on Friday.

He’s suspected of driving a 1998 Mercury Mystique that struck a 1999 Kawasaki motorcycle from behind on Thursday. Troopers say the motorcycle was stopped at a stop sign in Security when the car hit it, hurling the motorcycle some 60 feet.

Vigil allegedly left the scene.

Authorities say 52-year-old Craig Highline was wearing a helmet, but died from his injuries. He was an eight-year veteran of the campus police force at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

A listed phone number for Vigil could not be found.
