A 6-year-old Yorkshire terrier burned on a stove over the weekend is recovering at an animal hospital, and his owner remains in jail today in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Bobo, with burns over 50 percent of his body, is sedated and resting at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital, said Elisa Mazzaferro, a veterinarian at the hospital.
The dog is in “stable” condition, but doctors are concerned about possible internal injuries caused by the heat of the fire, Mazzaferro said.
Dozens of people have been inquiring about Bobo’s condition — and about adopting the dog.
“A lot of people have called,” Mazzaferro said.
Bobo, who weighs 10 pounds, is resting in a special chamber to help protect him from infection.
“He has become a little Houdini trying to get his bandages off,” Mazzaferro said.
Meanwhile, Tanya Martin, 38, is being held at Jefferson County Jail on suspicion of felony arson and cruelty to animals, according to Lakewood police.
Martin allegedly hog-tied Bobo and placed him on a burning phone book on the stove of her Wright Street Apartment in Lakewood.
Bobo was discovered by police after Martin’s neighbor at the Alpine Mountain Vista apartment complex smelled smoke and heard yelping at about 9 a.m. Sunday.
When police asked Martin what happened to the dog, she would not answer, according to court records.
“Tanya would not speak coherently and refused to make any statements about the dog,” according to an arrest affidavit.
She also declined to answer questions later Sunday at the Lakewood Police Department as she was being booked, the affidavit said.
Those interested in aiding Bobo can make donations earmarked for his care to Table Mountain Animal Center, 4105 Youngfield St., Golden, 80401.
