FORT COLLINS — The San Diego State staff isn’t the only group of coaches looking to burn the tape (or erase the hard drive) of Saturday’s 70-7 loss at New Mexico.
Colorado State, which travels to San Diego on Saturday night, is planning more film review of the Aztecs scaring Notre Dame this season than of the rout in Albuquerque.
“You watch them against Notre Dame, and they probably should have won the game,” Fairchild said of a 21-13 loss the second week of the season. “First of all, I was thinking that I have to get our football team to realize that (the 70-7) loss was one of those fluke things.”
The Aztecs have been decimated by injuries, especially on the defensive side. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Lindley has shown some potential, but there has been little success in the run department.
CSU can ill afford overconfidence after getting blown out 49-16 at Utah.
“They represent the upper end of the Mountain West Conference,” Fairchild said of the Utes. “I think myself and a lot of people here in the administration feel that we can get back to that level, and that’s our goal.”
Farris still No. 1.
Fairchild wants to see more improvement in the passing game, and by that he emphasized the protection package and especially all phases of the receiving game.
“So we’ll just keep pushing, and I believe we’ll break through,” he said.
Billy Farris remains the starting quarterback, and practice this week will determine the backup.
Recruiting update.
Floridians C.J. James, a 6-foot-2, 216-pound defensive end from Orlando, and Jansen Watson, a 5-10, 180-pound safety from Kissimmee, have committed to sign scholarships with the Rams. Watson attends the same high school (Osceola) as did current CSU freshman starting cornerback Gerard Thomas.
