A water quality lab — Building 95 — was evacuated at the Federal Center in Lakewood this afternoon when a gallon can containing a potentially hazardous substance was found there.

Cindy Matthews, spokeswoman for the West Metro Fire Protection District, said that about 130 employees were evacuated from the building and sent home.

She said that because the container was discovered about 3 p.m., and most employees were ending their work day, it had little affect on the operations of the facility.

The Jefferson County Bomb Squad was dispatched to the center to determine how to depose of the material.

Matthews said the evacuation is in no way connected to the evacuations and threatening letters received at Chase banks in Colorado and Oklahoma.
