More than 45 threatening letters have reached financial institutions in at least 11 states in the past three days, the FBI said Wednesday.

The letters first appeared in metro Denver on Monday morning, and 10 Chase banks in the metro area received the letters either Monday or Tuesday. All contained a white powder. The powder tested as harmless in all cases.

FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko said the Federal Bureau of Investigation, working with other law enforcement agencies, is “following up on numerous leads.”

Kathy Wright, spokeswoman for the FBI in Denver, said no new threatening letters were received by financial institutions in the Denver area Wednesday.

Law enforcement authorities said letters have been sent to financial institutions in Colorado, Oklahoma, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Illinois, Texas, Ohio, Georgia, California, Arizona and the District of Columbia.

Many of the letters have gone to Chase banks, but the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. in Dallas and the Office of U.S. Thrift Supervision in nearby Irving also have received the threats.

Mary Jane Rogers, spokeswoman for Chase banks, said seven Chase banks in the Phoenix area received letters Wednesday.
