COLORADO SPRINGS — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama leads GOP rival John McCain in fundraising where Republicans outnumber Democrats 2 to 1.
An analysis by the Colorado Springs Gazette found that Obama raised $265,920 as of the end of August compared with $202,626 raised by McCain — a dramatic shift for the area.
President Bush’s contributions from the same area in 2004 were three times that of Democratic Sen. John Kerry, who garnered only 35 percent of the vote. Since 1964, when Democrat Lyndon Johnson beat Republican Barry Goldwater, the Republican candidate for president has won in Colorado Springs.
However, donations to the Republican National Committee totaled $108,870 while the Democratic National Committee got $24,383.
