Last week: And what did you do on a busy Friday?
Kahl found time to lead his Farmers from a 16-0 halftime deficit to a final-minute, 24-23 comeback victory over Heritage, then top- ranked and the favorite in Class 4A.
He also became engaged to a Broncos cheerleader.
“I told the boys I’ve been part of three state championships, and this win was about as big as any of them,” Kahl said of a rowdy postgame celebration.
Wheat Ridge converted an interception of a screen pass inside Eagles territory into Parker Orms’ fourth touchdown of the second half, a 6-yarder with 45 seconds to play.
Said Kahl, who won a 4A state title in his first season with the Farmers: “It was emotional, and I don’t think anyone gave us a chance (to come back).”
Standing between Wheat Ridge and an outright win of the inaugural 4A West Metro title for a top playoff seed is a Saturday afternoon date at South (4-5), which has not defeated a team with a winning record.
The Kahls are one of the more accomplished football families in Colorado. Father Rick Kahl’s career as an assistant and then head coach at Fort Morgan spanned four decades and produced multiple state titles; brother Kent, as a Mustang, was The Denver Post 1989 Gold Helmet winner and now scouts for the San Francisco 49ers, for whom brother-in-law Scot McCloughan is the general manager.
The Denver Broncos high school coach-of-the-week award, in its 13th year, will have 10 honorees during the regular season. NFL Charities will present a check for $1,000 to the school’s program.
