MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE — Mozambican officials say 37 people have died in a small rural area in less than four days of a diarrheal disease.

Health Minister Ivo Garrido says authorities are investigating whether it could be cholera.

He said today it seems all the victims drank contaminated water from a river in the central province of Manica. At least 20 others are hospitalized.

Mozambique is one of the world’s poorest countries and is still struggling to rebuild its health and sanitation system after a long civil war. Cases of cholera are fairly common.
