CANON CITY, Colo.—Federal land managers are asking for public comment on a plan by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude to drape part of the Arkansas River with fabric.
The Bureau of Land Management’s announcement Thursday was a procedural step required before it decides whether to allow the “Over the River” project, which the husband-and-wife artists first dreamed up in 1992.
The BLM specifically is seeking comment on the use of public lands for the project.
The couple want to temporarily suspend a total of about 6 miles of silvery fabric over the river from Canon City to Salida. Large stretches of the river would remain uncovered.
The BLM is conducting a larger review of the plans, including an environmental impact statement.
