A 45-year-old Greeley man has been sentenced to five years in prison for possession of what officials said was a sophisticated pipe bomb.

Jack L. Chrisman was arrested by Greeley police on April 26 for driving on a revoked license.

During a search of his car, officers found a pipe bomb under the driver’s seat.

Investigators said the pipe bomb was a silver cylinder with two end caps and a fuse. Inside the cylinder was explosive material as well as metal BB’s.

Investigators said that on at least one previous occasion, Chrisman had detonated a similar bomb.

“The bomb was extremely dangerous because it contained projectiles designed to maximize its collateral damage,” said Richard E. Chase, special agent in charge of the Denver field office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The 63-month prison term was imposed by Senior U.S. District Judge John Kane. After serving his prison sentence, Chrisman was ordered to serve three years of supervised release.
