Montrose police have arrested a second 14-year-old boy on suspicion of conspiring with another teen to kill a 17-year-old Montrose High School student whose throat was slashed Tuesday morning.

The boy was arrested at 5:48 p.m. Thursday at a home in the 14700 block of Marine Road on conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, complicity to attempted first-degree murder and accessory to attempted first-degree murder, according to Kathi Kinkel, Montrose police spokeswoman.

The boy, a student at Montrose High, is being held at Grand Mesa Youth Services without bail, Kinkel said. His name was not released because he is a juvenile.

Mallory Haulman, 17, was assaulted just before school started Tuesday by another 14-year-old boy who was not a student at the high school. He was arrested shortly after the attack and faces attempted-murder charges.

“She didn’t know him, either,” Mallory’s father, Denny Haulman, said of the second boy arrested. “It’s disturbing, to say the least.”

Denny Haulman said he does not know what motivated the two boys, but he believes it was a random act of violence.

The second boy, who did not physically participate in the stabbing, had been at the school at the time, he said.

On Wednesday, Mallory returned home from the hospital with her parents; 15-year-old sister, Mae; and 11-year-old brother, Royal.

She will return to school as early as next week but can’t play basketball for another six weeks, according to her family.
