The word “date” in the upcoming Dated Holiday Sweater and Warm Clothing Drive Night is meant in the sense of “past its expiration date,” not the tingly night-on-the-town sense.

The organizers are looking for the sort of excessively festive sweaters that would make the late Mr. Blackwell twirl in his grave. The more sequins, faux jewels, rhinestones, ribbons, appliques, bright contrasting colors and textures, the better.

Wear your gaudy holiday sweater to The Rink at Belmar, South Teller Street and West Alaska Drive in Lakewood, at 6 p.m. Dec. 4, and you can skate for free until the rink closes.

Prizes will be awarded to the most arresting sweaters in four categories — children’s, women’s, men’s and best overall. The winners receive a Belmar entertainment package, including free movie passes, ice skating and bowling.

Don’t have an ugly holiday sweater? There’s free skating for anyone who brings warm, gently used or new clothing to donate to the Jeffco Action Center, a human services nonprofit agency that helps the needy.
