AKRON, Colo.—Akron beat Wray 37-8 to win the Class 1A football championship on Saturday, the third straight title for the school.
It was the fifth championship for the Rams under the leadership of coach Brian Christensen, who played at Akron in the 1980s.
Akron, known for its single-wing offense, got out to an early 17-0 lead in the first quarter as Dalton Jefferson recorded 112 of his 272 yards rushing.
Wray, which ended the season 12-1, missed its only chance to turn things around in the second quarter. Kelly Siegrest capped an 83-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring run as the Eagles converted a two-point pass to get within 17-8 and forced the Rams into their only punt.
However, Akron’s Alec Vasquez picked off quarterback Brady Buck and Wray also roughed the kicker on a 45-yard field goal attempt.
Wray only had two possessions in the second half.
