A teenage passenger was killed and the driver injured in an accident yesterday afternoon that closed Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs.

Wade Lehman, 19, of Colorado Springs was dead at the scene, Colorado Springs police said in a news release.

His girlfriend, Dezirae Shier-Gill, 19, of Colorado Springs was driving. She was treated at a hospital and cited for “careless driving resulting in death,” police said.

The accident happened about noon Monday on southbound I-25 just north of the Bijou Street exit.

A semi driven by Lawrence Molina, 48, of California, had pulled to the shoulder because he had some mechanical problems.

Shier-Gill was driving a sedan southbound on I-25. She was talking to Lehman and became “distracted and drifted onto the shoulder,” the release said.

Her sedan hit the back of the semi and flipped over.

Lehman was a 2008 graduate of Coronado High School in Colorado Springs and was a freshman at Colorado State University-Pueblo, where he was a wrestler.

Molina was not injured.
