BLOOMFIELD, N.M.—New Mexico State Police say a Colorado woman was killed after crashing her car into a cement culvert off U.S. 550, approximately 45 miles south of Bloomfield.
Margaretta Maloney, 56, of Mancos, Colo., lost control of the car on Thanksgiving before it slid off the road and flipped, landing on its roof in a culvert in Rio Arriba County.
State Police Lt. Dan Becker says Maloney was likely driving too fast on the highway, which was slick from rainy and snowy conditions.
Becker says Maloney was wearing a seat belt, but the car’s roof took the brunt of the impact and crushed her. He says she was killed instantly.
