Former University of Colorado runner Kara Goucher had a momentous marathon debut in New York last month, finishing third and setting American records in the process. Now she’s turning her sights on Boston.
Boston Marathon race officials said Tuesday that Goucher, 30, will compete in the 113th running of the world’s most historic marathon April 20.
After competing in two events on the track at the Beijing Olympics, Goucher completed the New York City Marathon in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 53 seconds on Nov. 2. That was the fastest first-time marathon for an American woman and the fastest time ever run in New York by an American woman.

U.S. Ski Team tabs Bloom.
Jeremy Bloom’s comeback to the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team remained on track after he was added to the 39-member roster Tuesday. Bloom, a Loveland High School graduate who spent two years trying to catch on as a receiver in the NFL, is trying to make his third Olympics.
Bloom was named to the “C” team. On the “A” team are ski-crosser Casey Puckett of Aspen and moguls specialists Michelle Roark and Emiko Torito, both of Denver. Named to the “B” squad were Jake Fiala, ski-cross, Frisco; and Ryan St. Onge, aerials, Winter Park.
Metro’s Cito honored.
Metro State soccer standout Nicole Cito was selected for the NSCAA Division II All-America women’s team after leading the Roadrunners to the NCAA semifinals. The senior was one of three defenders on the first team.
DU, AFA lacrosse players grab honors.
Denver sophomore attackman Jamie Lincoln was selected to the Inside Lacrosse preseason All-America second team. Named to the honorable mention list were Denver midfielder Joey Murray and defender Dillon Roy, and Air Force midfielders Griffin Nevitt and Dan Gnazzo.
DU’s Garza to train with U.S.
The U.S. under-20 men’s national soccer team invited Denver freshman forward Sam Garza to its eight-day training camp this week, the team’s coach Thomas Rongen said.
14ers rally for win.
Trailing by seven points with 6:56 to play, the Colorado 14ers went on a 34-8 run to beat Rio Grande Valley 118-99 in a NBA Development League game at the Broomfield Event Center.
Dominique Coleman and Eddie Gill each scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Rage can’t hold lead.
Daymen Rycroft and Tyler Butler gave the Rocky Mountain Rage a two-goal first-period lead, but the Rapid City Rush scored three times in the third for a 3-2 Central Hockey League win.
