FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Authorities say a Fort Collins woman and teenager have been arrested following an alleged assault that left a vehicle partially submerged in a pond.

Police say 26-year-old Edwina Sanchez and a 17-year-old boy forced Michael Whiteis out of Sanchez’s apartment Wednesday morning and drove him to a golf course, where they parked their car on a frozen pond and assaulted him.

Whiteis escaped, ran to a nearby home and called authorities. Larimer County sheriff’s deputies responded and transported the 19-year-old Whiteis to a hospital, where he was treated for cuts and bruises and released.

Police say Sanchez and the 17-year-old were unaware they had parked on a pond, and their vehicle broke through the ice when they tried to drive away. The two got out of the car before it sank, and fled on foot.

Sanchez and the teen, whose name was not released, both were arrested later on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder.

Authorities say the motive for the assault is unclear, and an investigation is ongoing.

The Larimer County Dive Team assisted in recovering the vehicle.
