ST. MORITZ, SWITZERLAND — Anja Paerson of Sweden won a World Cup super-combi event Friday, and American Lindsey Vonn maintained her overall lead despite skiing off course in the slalom.
Paerson clocked 44.03 seconds in the slalom and was first in the super-G for a combined time of 1 minute, 41.87 seconds. Nicole Hosp of Austria had the best slalom time to finish second, 1.12 seconds behind. Fabienne Suter of Switzerland was third.
Defending overall champion Vonn was 14th in super-G under windy conditions and snowfall, but skied out near the top of the hill in the slalom.
“For me, the problem was not so much the light as that I overskied,” said Vonn, a former Ski Club Vail standout, after the super-G. “On this course you can definitely let it run. It was good information for the downhill and super-G this weekend.”
After nine races, Vonn holds the World Cup overall standings with 438 points. She is followed by Tanja Poutiainen of Finland, who did not race, at 400 and Maria Riesch of Germany at 378. They are followed by Hosp (323) and Paerson (298).
No American finished in the top 20 in the super-combi despite four placing in the top 15 in the super-G.
Leanne Smith of Conway, N.H., was fourth after the morning race, but, like Vonn, made mistakes in the top half of the slalom and skied out after hitting a gate.
Chelsea Marshall of Pittsfield, Vt., finished 29th after being 10th in the super-G, and Keely Kelleher of Big Sky, Mont., finished 32nd overall.
American Julia Mancuso missed a gate and was disqualified in the slalom.
The second practice session for Saturday’s downhill was canceled because of wind, fog and steady snowfall.
