CENTENNIAL — An Aurora mother accused of repeatedly beating her 3-year-old daughter with a metal towel rack and coat hanger, killing her, has been found guilty by a jury.

Susie Ida Quartey, charged in the death of her daughter, Jolyn Torpoh, was found guilty of child abuse resulting in death Friday in Arapahoe County District Court.

She faces between 16 to 48 years prison and is scheduled for sentencing Feb. 28.

Police said the girl was battered repeatedly with pieces of a metal towel rack and a coat hanger before she died.

“The amount of pain this 3-year-old endured was significant,” prosecutor Jay Williford said in a statement. “This was not a one-time loss of control. I believe the jury saw that.”

Detectives who viewed autopsy photographs estimated that Jolyn suffered at least 50 blows, leaving puncture wounds and bruises along her legs, face and backside, according to an arrest affidavit.

Quartey told police she was carrying Jolyn on her back, wrapped in traditional African cloths, when she and her daughter fell together onto rocks in the family’s backyard in April.
