Joy Kaylor, 70, would like to practice with the Colorado Senior Olympic women’s basketball squad three days a week, but she has a commitment to the Gilpin County Choral Group on Wednesday nights. That leaves her free only for Friday and Sunday morning practices.

Kaylor is known as the squad’s mom and organized the group by putting a notice for senior ladies who might want to play ball with her in the Senior Newsletter at the Senior Games in Greeley six years ago.

“I thought I could still be competitive and keep up with these gals,” she said.

It’s all bounced forward from there. Now at least 30 women, all 50-and-older, are committed to attend one clinic per month, practice one hour per week and attend the National Senior Games in the San Francisco Bay Area in August 2009. The squad is composed of beginners to those who’ve played in college to those who’ve coached.

Madelon Eichhorn’s grandchildren love watching her play. Eichhorn, 60, of Broomfield, played basketball in high school and coached her two daughters when they were in school.
