CORONA, N.M.—Two people were killed and about 50 others injured after the tour bus they were riding in flipped on an icy highway in central New Mexico.
The bus was traveling from El Paso to Aurora, Colo. on Friday night.
Torrance County Sheriff Clarence Gibson said deputies are working to identify one of the deceased victims and cannot release the name of the other victim until relatives have been notified.
Many of the passengers were from Chihuahua, Mexico, Gibson said.
The bus, owned by the El Paso, Texas-based Los Paisanos bus company, was traveling north on U.S. 54 about 8 miles north of Corona when the driver lost control in a construction zone and the bus flipped.
A 9-year-old boy was airlifted to a hospital and 15 others were taken by ambulance to an Albuquerque hospital.
Gibson said many of the injured people had been released from the hospital and none were in critical condition.
The roads were snowpacked and icy in the area, which may have been partly to blame for the crash. Gibson said no citations have been issued, but the cause of the accident was still being investigated Saturday.
U.S. 54 was closed for about seven hours Friday while authorities cleared the scene.
Employees answering the phones at three Los Paisanos offices in El Paso declined to comment on the crash and were unable to locate their managers.
