OMAHA, Neb.—The governing body that will operate the new 24,000-seat baseball stadium in downtown Omaha has announced that a pro team in the independent American Association will play in the venue beginning in 2011.

Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority president and CEO Roger Dixon said Tuesday that MECA and the league are working to find an owner for the Omaha team.

The American Association is not affiliated with any major-league teams. Lincoln and nine other cities in the Midwest and South have American Association teams.

MECA had been in talks with the Class AAA Omaha Royals. The Royals are moving ahead with plans to build a 6,000-seat stadium in suburban Sarpy County.
