Colorado Springs firefighters found an unconscious woman who later died when they responded today to a house fire.

Firefighters found the main level of the home at 2227 Lochaven Drive burning after a neighbor reported the blaze at 1:45 p.m.

They came upon the unconscious woman near the front door. She had fire and smoke-related injuries, according to a department press release.

Firefighters tried to resuscitate her, and she was taken to Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m.

The woman’s identity hasn’t been determined.

Detectives from the Violent Crimes/Homicide Unit are conducting a joint investigation into the death along with fire investigators. The investigation is routine whenever a person is killed or severely injured in a fire.

The fire was contained and limited to the main level of the home.

The victim will be taken to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death.
