Archbishop of Denver Charles Chaput tonight will bless the Gift of Mary Homeless Shelter’s new location at the former St. Joseph’s Catholic School site.

The shelter, which primarily serves homeless women, is operated by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Denver, which seeks to help the “poorest of the poor,” according to the Archdiocese of Denver.

The shelter relocated from Capitol Hill to 605 W. Sixth Ave., near St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. The new shelter will officially open Sunday.

“The sisters were looking for a poorer area to work,” the Rev. Jorge de los Santos, pastor of St. Joseph’s, said in a statement. “…They found St. Joseph’s Parish to be a good place where they could work for the poor, live with the poor and also help the homeless.”

The shelter can house up to eight women. The Archdiocese of Denver donated more than $300,000 to renovate the school building, which had been used for storage since the school closed in 1993, according to the church.
