LONGMONT, Colo.—Investigators are making progress in the case involving a 47-year-old man who was fatally shot last week in Boulder, police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said Monday.

“Police are not prepared yet to make any arrests in the homicide, but the investigation is moving rapidly,” she said in a statement.

William Dwayne Andrews was shot in the head and chest Friday in what police call a “disagreement among known associates.”

Police have said they’re investigating whether the shooting was linked to an incident in Longmont, in which a man held a shotgun to a woman’s head at her motor home and fired a round into the air before leaving with another man.

Longmont police arrested Joseph Abeyta, 41, in that case Saturday. Abeyta is in the Boulder County Jail on a $250,000 bond. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and felony menacing.

“Based on evidence gathered over the weekend, investigators now believe that Abeyta has knowledge of or involvement in the death of his associate, Andrews,” Huntley said.

Meanwhile, Andrews’ sister, Josie Furney, said Monday that her older brother’s criminal record doesn’t reflect the man he was.

Andrews was born and raised in Longmont, but lived in Boulder because of occasional work and an apartment that the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless helped him secure. He loved animals and woodworking and was good at making furniture, Furney said.

“He was trying to get by, and he was a little stressed about finances because I think his unemployment was running out,” she told the Daily Times-Call.

A few days before his death, Andrews helped a friend move and had allowed a homeless man to stay with him in his apartment, she said.

“He was always helping somebody,” Furney said. “I just wish he would have stayed away from the people he was hanging out with, especially recently.”
