Highlights from the Legislature on Monday:
— Colorado drivers who drive slowly and won’t pull aside to allow speedier cars to pass could face fines under a bill passed by the state House. The proposed law requires drivers traveling below the speed limit to pull aside when five or more cars are backed up behind them. Violators could be punished with a $50 fine and three points on their licenses. The bill (House Bill 1042) passed on a 37-27 vote and now goes to the Senate.
— A bill that would have forced local communities to discontinue efforts to protect children from gun accidents got shot down during a hearing in a Senate committee. The bill (Senate Bill 74) would have prohibited safe-storage ordinances in Colorado and allowed the sale of guns and accessories manufactured in Colorado to be exempt from federal laws. It was killed by the Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee on a 3-2 vote.
— The House unanimously a bill allowing military members and veterans to decide how to dispose of remains of their colleagues that have not been claimed. The measure (House Bill 1058) now goes to the Senate.
— The Senate approved a bill (Senate Bill 1) that requires state and local governments to develop wildfire protection plans. The bill now goes to the House for debate.
