A bill aimed at getting slowpoke drivers to speed up or pull over passed the House on a 37-27 vote this morning.

House Bill 1042 would require drivers who are traveling below the speed limit with five or more cars backed up behind them to pull over at the first safe opportunity. They also can travel in the right-hand lane on two lane roads.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Michael Merrifield, D-Manitou Springs, says he hopes to cut down on road rage and dangerous passing while giving authorities a better definition of what impeding traffic means.

Opponents argue the rules would be unsafe and give highway patrol another reason to stop motorists.
