SANTA MONICA, Calif. — “Thriller” may be headed to Broadway, but a dispute over the groundbreaking music video of Michael Jackson’s hit song may be headed to court first.
Acclaimed director John Landis’ Levitsky Productions Inc. sued Jackson for unspecified damages Jan. 21, days before a Broadway producer announced he had bought the rights to adapt “Thriller” for the stage. Landis, who co-wrote and shot the “Thriller” video, claims the pop star failed to pay him royalties and that the producer doesn’t have the authority to create a play based on the video or a documentary that Landis directed.
