ARVADA—An Arvada woman accused of posing as a tax accountant has pleaded guilty to six felony counts of tax fraud.

Prosecutors say 51-year-old Denise Smith mostly worked for firefighters and police officers and inflated their deductions so they would pay less in taxes and get larger refunds. They say many of Smith’s customers ended up being audited and had to pay penalties and interest.

Prosecutors say Smith ran the business out of her home.

She remains free on $50,000 bail and could face up to 27 years in prison when she is sentenced in April. Smith entered her plea this week.
