We thought we were talking about Punxsutawney Phil’s performance on Groundhog Day when we asked entrants to the Denver Post $25 Haiku Contest consider the issue of “shadow.” As it turns out, poets had nature on their minds. We liked the verse composed by Jill Miles, of Granby, best of all:

Shaded from the sun,

snowy prints glow crystal blue —

late afternoon walk
