Commerce City residents who live near Murray Farm should brace for some big bangs as the farm sets off “cracker shells” in an effort to scare off foraging geese.

A large gaggle of the birds has taken up residency at the farm, 11010 Havana St., where they’re endangering winter crops, according to the Commerce City Police Department.

“They have a bunch of geese up there,” said Lt. Chuck Saunier. “Apparently, they’re eating his winter wheat.”

Farm operators have received a permit to set off cracker shells in an effort to have the geese move on, Saunier said.

The Buffalo Run Golf Course in Commerce City also has a permit to set off the shells to frighten flocks.

The shells, which make a very loud noise, are designed to alarm geese but not harm them, Saunier said.

Shells can be set off randomly between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The farm’s permit, which started Tuesday, runs through March 20.
