The El Pomar Foundation has decided to teach college students about poverty this week — at one of the most lavish hotels in the state.
More than 200 college student leaders are to descend on the opulent Broadmoor hotel in Colorado Springs on Friday and Saturday to learn about rural poverty, homelessness and market-based approaches to poverty eradication. The summit is part of a two-year program to introduce students to community leaders and nonprofit organizations.
But did a conference on poverty have to be held at The Broadmoor?
The hotel is listed as one of two “five star” hotels in the state by the Colorado Hotel and Lodging Association. Weekend room rates range from $195 to $680 a night.
“This year, as we have done every year, a competitive bid process was undertaken to determine where the conference would be held and the best bid came from The Broadmoor,” said El Pomar spokeswoman Josie Burke in a written statement, noting the Colorado Springs-based foundation is on the grounds of the hotel.
